How the “Zero Separation Tour” Is Changing Thinking in Neonatal Care ~ Michel Collart & Laetitia Van Der Elst (Belgium)

Today everyone agrees that Zero Separation is the best for the development of the vulnerable newborn.
Yes! But its’ implementation still has many hurdles to overcome. And the main obstacle is resistance to change.
Change mostly finds its’ source in the fear of the unknown, lack of control and perturbation of existing routines. The “yes but” syndrome is particularly difficult to overcome in critical environments such as intensive care.
A crucial part to overcome resistance to change is INFORMATION: “clear and transparent communication to explain the „why,“ „what,“ and „how“ of the change, while also providing training, support, and a compelling vision for the future.
Information will help to address caregivers fears and concerns about the unknown, build trust, and provide the necessary skills to adapt, ultimately reducing resistance.
Our challenge as from 2022 was to spread clear and transparent information, provided by the best Zero Separation scientists and made available to every caregiver in Belgium.
But caregivers have little or no time to go and listen to the best specialists in international congresses. Furthermore we wanted the specialists to be as practical as possible.
This is why we decided to bring the scientists to the caregivers work floor: the NICU.
The Zero Separation Tour was born!
Michel collart & laetitia van der elst čtverecLaetitia & Michel are the founders of Noah’s Ark Belgium; the main Belgian parent association providing support and advocacy for vulnerable newborn and their parents since 2020.
Laetitia is an occupational therapist who has travelled the world as a tourist guide and coach after suffering a severe form of leukaemia at the age of 22.
Michel has a degree in law and has spent his lifetime career as an entrepreneur in advertising and human resources.
Laetitia and Michel had a premature little boy in 2019 who died from NEC after 48 days in the NICU after being separated unnecessarily from his mother. Ever since they are fighting everyday to make sure this does not happen to anyone else anymore.
