When her son Zachary was born 12 weeks prematurely in 2001 in Houston, Texas, weighing less than two pounds, Yamile Jackson, PhD, PE, PMP, learned firsthand that a parent’s touch is as vital as any medical intervention—and that it is essential for parental healing as well. The day after his birth, she was introduced to skin-to-skin contact, also known as kangaroo care, and experienced its profound impact.

Because she was not allowed to stay in the NICU with her son, she used her background in ergonomics and safety engineering to develop a tool that supported their bond during periods of separation. Her family’s trauma sparked a lifelong commitment to ensuring that every baby is welcomed with love and connection, and that all families and clinicians experience the healing power of safety, trauma-informed, neuroprotective, family-centered developmental care.

What began with her own baby’s journey grew into a collaborative effort that evolved into a global movement advancing the implementation of zero separation—the practice of keeping parents and infants together as an integral part of neonatal care.

This lecture bridges personal story and scientific framework, illustrating how love, evidence, safety, and engineering intersect to operationalize zero separation and trauma-informed care across the continuum—from birth through discharge and beyond.
